We are pleased to share that River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) has engaged in a partnership with The Link: Youth and Family Supports. Formerly known as Macdonald Youth Services, The Link is a First Nations, non-profit youth and family serving organization whose governance was repatriated to Brokenhead Ojibway Nation last year, and RETSD, the second largest division in Manitoba, with nearly 19,000 students, began this partnership at the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year. October 10 is World Mental Health Day. The health and well-being of our students is a key priority in RETSD’s Strategic Plan. One of the ways we support student mental health is through Sources of Strength, a mental well-being and suicide prevention program. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4drIWP1

Recently, Indigenous Grade 12 students from schools in the River East area embarked on a meaningful project to create their own ribbon skirts and shirts to wear at the divisional powwow in May and at their graduation ceremonies. The journey began with an afternoon at Marshall Fabrics, where students carefully selected materials that reflected their personal vision. They then spent a day cutting, sewing, and bringing their designs to life, creating garments that celebrate culture, identity, and pride. This opportunity will continue to grow. At the end of October, Indigenous Grade 12 students from the high schools in Transcona will begin designing and creating their own ribbon skirts and shirts, carrying this tradition forward and preparing for important milestones in their school journey.
