ROAD, PATROL, AND BUS SAFETY

Transportation – whether by foot, bike, car, or school bus – is a critical safety consideration for RETSD schools. To support student safety, RETSD schools use student safety patrols and adult crossing guards where necessary.
Student patrols are trained to safety control, direct, and instruct students to cross streets near schools. A student patrol is also assigned to school buses to help younger students get on and off buses safely. Patrols also report concerning behaviour and incidents to the patrol supervisor so they can be addressed. They also take note of suspicious people or vehicles, as well as inattentive drivers.
Drivers are reminded that there is a 30 km/hr speed limitation near schools. In addition, there may be restrictions on where a vehicle may stop briefly to drop children off at school or park. Please monitor for signage and act accordingly – for the safety of all students and community members.
Please see policies JLIC and JLICA for information about our school patrol program and use of adult crossing guards. In addition, the School Patrol Handbook is available for review.
