All Aboard for Safety: The Community of Caring Behind Student Transportation

For thousands of RETSD students, the school day begins at a bus stop—where they wait for a bus driver behind the wheel of a big yellow school bus. But there’s more to it than that: behind the scenes, transportation office staff keep an eye on the big picture, and school staff and leaders start early to make sure students know how to get on and off the bus, how to transfer to a second bus when necessary, and how to travel safely. 

The goal: making sure the journey to and from school is just as safe as the destination.

Student transportation encompasses so much more than what we see when a bus rolls by filled with students. It’s an all-hands-on-deck situation, especially at the start of the school year. Kindergarten students are learning how to board a bus before they even meet their classroom teacher. New drivers are learning the ropes, and returning ones are learning new or altered routes with diverse students. School staff and leaders are all on scene, watching loading zones, managing crossing procedures, and supporting students so that everyone gets to where they are supposed to be safely. 

Behind all of it are the people in the busy transportation office. As drivers radio in about issues on their routes, office staff are carefully listening to their messages and troubleshooting. At the same time, the telephones are ringing and must be answered. Staff listen to parents’ concerns, respond to questions, and solve problems. It’s like watching a well-oiled machine with an extremely big heart—because what is clear is that every single person wants to make sure students feel safe as they are transported to school and back home. 

School bus delays, especially at the end of the day, are a regular occurrence—traffic jams, construction, and responding to student needs sometimes slows things down. As drivers communicate the delays on the radio, transportation staff update the RETSD website and Stopfinder app with delay notifications for parents. It’s the best way for parents to get up-to-date information on the status of their student’s transportation. 

As the school year gets underway, parents can feel confident knowing that many caring hands are working together every day to support student transportation. It’s a lot of coordination, but it all comes down to one thing: students getting where they need to go safely, every single day.
