School Counsellors Offer Hope in RETSD Hallways

Our schools are places of learning, growth, and optimism. But students may also experience difficult decisions, fears, challenges, and other hardships – whether at school, home, or in the community – and this may affect their ability to interact and perform to the best of their abilities at school.

RETSD’s school counsellors may not be front-of-mind for everyone. But in today’s complicated, chaotic world, school counsellors play a critical role in creating safe spaces where students can find support, share what’s on their minds, and process experiences. Counsellors come alongside students during moments of change and crisis, helping students to navigate academic decisions, career exploration, social struggles, personal challenges, and life transitions.

Every year, the first week in February is recognized as Canadian School Counselling Week. This year, the theme is “Hope in Every Hallway.”  Hope enables a growth mindset, which helps people to move forward with confidence and resilience. But finding hope in the midst of uncertainty, change, and hardship can feel impossible. That’s why we have 72 school counsellors working in K-12 schools to support students and families throughout the division.

Life can be hard. School counsellors help students find hope and overcome hurdles that block their path to Mino-Pimatisiwin, the Good Life.

Join us in celebrating our school counsellors this week! And if you are a student who is currently struggling or feeling stuck, please talk to your school administrator or school counsellor. Help is never far away in RETSD!
