In Appreciation Award Presented to the Johnson Family
Congratulations to the Johnson family as this year’s recipients of the River East Transcona School Division In Appreciation Award. This award is presented to an individual, individuals, or an organization in recognition of their outstanding contribution to RETSD and exemplifies the Board of Trustees’ commitment to building partnerships with those who give so much of themselves to the students and staff of RETSD.
In 2000 during the May long weekend, Kyle Johnson tragically lost his life at the age of 19. Kyle was a recent graduate of Murdoch MacKay Collegiate, and a skilled, knowledgeable and driven hockey player. To honour their son’s life, his parents, Jim and Marlys Johnson, created a memorial scholarship in Kyle’s name.
Scholarships are provided to three graduating students, one from each of the high schools in Transcona, with the first scholarships being presented in 2001. Since then, over $200,000.00 in scholarships have been awarded to 72 deserving students who have been on an organized sport team, have had a proven academic record, and positive involvement in their community.
The presentation of scholarships at this year’s convocation ceremonies will mark the 25" anniversary of the Kyle Johnson Memorial Scholarship.
Along with the annual scholarships, financial support is provided to a hockey development camp held at the East End Community Centre during the winter break every year, and to support the breakfast program at Bernie Wolfe School for the last 15 years.
Out of that sadness of losing a family member, the Johnson Family has found a way to honour Kyle’s memory while providing lasting support to RETSD and community.
