High School Students Discover New Pathways in Sport Through Officiating
Students from River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) Senior Years schools recently took part in a Volleyball Officials Clinic led by a dedicated member of our local volleyball community. This event gave students a unique opportunity to stay involved in the sport—even if they’re no longer playing—by stepping into the rewarding world of officiating.
For many athletes, finishing their time on the court doesn’t mean the end of their connection to the game. Officiating and coaching offer meaningful ways to give back to the game, stay active in the sport they love, and develop valuable life skills like decision-making, confidence, and communication.
“Officiating has given me incredible opportunities,” said Maya Haddad, a student at River East Collegiate. “It’s more than just a way to stay active in the sports I love and earn some extra money—it’s shaped me as a person, boosting my confidence and deepening my connection with the community. I’ve gained invaluable skills and experiences, and I feel truly privileged to be officiating basketball at a high level. Seeing how far I’ve come is incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to see where refereeing takes me next.”
This clinic is more than just a learning experience—it also opens the door to earning an honorarium for each game officiated. As student officials gain experience, they can take on more games and build both their confidence and their résumé. Many officials begin at the middle school or high school level and progress to club volleyball, post-secondary competition, national tournaments, and even international events such as the Olympic Games. It’s a chance to lead, grow, and stay connected to a sport that has already given them so much.
"We want students to know there are opportunities like this in the community," said Tim Au, physical education and health consultant. "Whether it's volleyball now or basketball later this season, there are accessible and inclusive ways to develop leadership, gain work experience, and build a future in sport."
RETSD is excited to offer officiating clinics throughout the school year. An upcoming Basketball Officials Clinic in December will follow a similar format: a single, full-day session with no cost to RETSD students. Prior experience as an official is not required—while a basic understanding of the sport is helpful, passion and a willingness to learn are what matter most.
How to Get Involved
Students interested in officiating volleyball or basketball can look for registration links and posters in Senior Years schools in November. They are also encouraged to connect with physical education staff at Middle Years schools to ask about officiating opportunities.
For more information, contact Physical Education and Health Consultant Tim Au at tau@retsd.mb.ca. Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
Whether you’re a lifelong athlete or someone looking to step into a new role, officiating is a great way to be part of the game, build leadership skills and explore a future in sport.
