Empowering Students with Additional Needs: A Community Approach to Meaningful Education
Historically, students with additional needs have transitioned out of school at age 21, moving into adult day programs typically chosen by their guardians. However, in recent years our community has grown and evolved, underscoring the importance of recognizing the value these students bring to society.
Our division is dedicated to preparing students for a variety of pathways. Starting in high school, they can pursue academics and explore post-secondary options to build skills for their chosen careers.
Once students have completed most of their coursework, they can further develop employability skills through initiatives such as Project LIFE and Project SEARCH. Project LIFE is a multi-year transition program where students develop, practise and strengthen skills that lead to adult independence and successful, integrated employment.
“Project LIFE provides students the opportunity to explore employment options in a variety of settings while gaining independence at home, in school and the community,” said Mary LePage Leclerc, Project Life coordinator.
Project SEARCH is a school-to-work training program for students with disabilities. Participants are immersed in a host business and gain more than 700 hours of hands-on work experience geared to in-demand roles, while learning employability skills and career planning with support from a teacher and trainers.
Last year, our division hosted a career fair, giving students the chance to explore post-high school options. This year, the expanded fair will offer even more opportunities for students to learn about various agencies and programs, helping them to develop clearer paths for their futures.
One parent shared their experience from last year’s fair: "The Career Fair was an eye-opener for us. It gave us a comprehensive overview of the options available for our child after high school, helping us make informed decisions about their future."
River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) is committed to a community-focused approach that supports students with additional needs, ensuring they receive a meaningful education that builds on their strengths and prepares them for success.
