Education Week in Manitoba
For those who follow RETSD on social media, you will know that we regularly share stories celebrating the achievements of students across our division. These posts highlight the rich learning taking place every day in our schools — from intensive technical and vocational programming to outstanding drama productions, comprehensive language programs, and innovative sTeam learning (Science, Technology, English, Arts, and Math). These experiences, and many more — including land-based learning, athletics, music, Indigenous education, and community partnerships — are available to students across all 43 of our schools.
These opportunities do not happen by chance. They are made possible through the commitment, care, and expertise of more than 3,300 staff members who bring our shared purpose to life each day: to help students realize their full potential and become inspired, skilled, and responsible citizens who demonstrate Mino-Pimatisiwin — the Good Life. For those of us working in education, this purpose is more than words; it is a calling. The learning that takes place in our classrooms, shops, studios, gymnasiums, and outdoor spaces is laying the foundation for what our community will become, both now and in the future.
Just yesterday, members of the Board of Trustees and the senior administration team spent the morning at one of our schools watching a group of Kindergarten to Grade 8 students present their learning to one another and to members of our community. I was genuinely moved as I observed these young learners bring their ideas to life with confidence and pride. Moments like these remind us of what education is truly about — equipping students with the tools, experiences, and encouragement they need to turn their dreams into reality.
Here in Manitoba and across Canada, we are fortunate to have access to strong public education, something that is not available to every child around the world. Our school division exists within a community that values education and supports our shared work. Families, Elders, community organizations, and local partners play a vital role in shaping meaningful learning experiences and reinforcing the importance of education beyond school walls. Together, we create environments where children and youth feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.
As we recognize Education Week, we take time to celebrate the students who are learning, the staff who are teaching and supporting, and the community that stands alongside our schools.
Happy Education Week.
