Divisional Aquatics Program Enhances Student Mobility and Well-Being

The Divisional Aquatics program is causing ripples of inclusion in RETSD by supporting students with mobility and physical needs who benefit from a therapeutic aquatic environment.

Collaborating with the City of Winnipeg, the RETSD transportation department, divisional physiotherapists, educational assistants, and divisional inclusion teachers, 12 students attend Sargeant Tommy Prince Place Pool weekly where they participate in an aquatics environment with a physiotherapy program tailored to their specific needs.

Sargeant Tommy Prince Place is an accessible facility, which includes mechanical lifts, pool entry ramps, and water wheelchairs. These modifications ensure that students can safely and comfortably enter and exit the pool.

The research on the benefits of being in the water is overwhelmingly positive. Water provides buoyancy, which can alleviate pressure on joints and muscles and provides improved mobility and flexibility by providing a greater range of motion. Students can weight bear and walk in the water with support because of the buoyancy. Also, being in the water can be calming, stress relieving, and can provide a sense of freedom and independence.

Physiotherapists play a crucial role in the program. They assist with complex lifts, transfers, and the use of specialized aquatic equipment. The program also couldn’t be done without the educational assistants who are in the water with the students to assist with programming.

“Working with students in the water is incredibly rewarding. The buoyancy and warmth of the water help reduce pain and improve mobility, allowing our students to experience a sense of freedom and joy. It’s amazing to see their progress and the positive impact on their physical and emotional well-being,” said Veronica Van Leeuwen, RETSD physiotherapist

The divisional aquatics program is committed to making a difference in the lives of our students by providing the necessary resources, supports, and ensuring that every student can enjoy the benefits of the aquatic environment and thrive.
