CBC Manitoba Future 40 Recognition for RETSD Employee

An RETSD employee, Tracie Léost, has been chosen by CBC Manitoba to be on its Future 40 list—10 Manitobans who are 40 or younger, “all working to make this province better for future generations.”

Léost, an award-winning young Métis leader, activist, and athlete from St. Laurent (in Treaty 1 territory), is a community liaison worker at Valley Gardens Middle School. She has engaged her students in drum- and rattle-making, drumming, beading classes, and storytelling around the fire, and events such as community cleanups, drum feasts, paint nights, movie nights, and bingo nights, barbecues, and full moon ceremonies.

Léost has a strong commitment to contributing to social justice initiatives and has gained international attention for her advocacy. In 2018, she received the Métis Youth Indspire Award, and in 2020, she was inducted into the Order of Gabriel Dumont. Also in 2020, she founded Waanishka Movement Inc., a non-profit organization that supports Indigenous youth to rise.
