2026 Divisional Powwow: A Celebration for All

On May 20, River East Transcona School Division welcomed the community to its annual divisional Powwow at Collège Miles Macdonell Collegiate. The Powwow is a celebratory event that attracts drum groups and traditional dancers from across the province, as well as students, families, and other community members.

The Powwow is one of many ways that RETSD shows its commitment to truth and reconciliation, and to implementing the guiding principles of Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning’s Mamàhtawisiwin—The Wonder We are Born With: An Indigenous Education Policy Framework. The framework is an important part of how the education system in Manitoba is responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. It encourages educators to include Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing into their lessons and activities and to teach the true history of this land, including the spirit and intent of the Treaties, which supports the success and well-being of Indigenous learners.

The divisional Powwow is welcoming environment for everyone and an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous culture. As a practical way of including the Treaty principles of mutual recognition, respect, relationships, and shared responsibility, the Powwow helps to build a better future for us all.

The annual Powwow is also an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Indigenous graduates from across the division. Graduating students were honoured in the Grand Entry and were given opportunity to share their names and which school they are graduating from.

“We are grateful to our Elders and Indigenous community members who share their teachings and experiences with our students,” said Leanne Smith, Consultant for Indigenous Perspectives and Education. “Their guidance and support enable us to offer the Powwow for the entire community, and to help us create a supportive and culturally inclusive environment for Indigenous youth.”

MiigwechEkosani, Maarsii, and Thank You to the Elders, dancers, drummers, dignitaries, vendors and other community members who took part and helped us create an exceptional Powwow celebration.
