KEY CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Families may apply for Schools of Choice but there is no guarantee of acceptance as all catchment registrations need to be processed first.
  • Schools of Choice applications can be submitted, and schools will establish a wait list with no guarantees
  • Depending on the circumstances, final decisions regarding acceptance or denial may be postponed until the first week of school in September. Therefore, it is critical for students to be enrolled in their designated school.
  • There will be no additional staffing for accepted School of Choice registrations.
  • Be mindful of historic trends regarding walk-up registrations in the fall.
  • Be aware of new housing developments in your catchment area.
  • Parents and students need to understand that once a School of Choice application has been given final approval, it will remain in effect, only at the school to which the student has been admitted, and only until the student completes the highest grade level at the school into which they have been admitted. Students must re-apply through the Schools of Choice process upon changing schools or at transition to the next educational level (early to middle, middle to senior).
  • Students who withdraw from divisional programs (for example, heritage language programs, technical vocational programs) must register at their designated schools and may apply to remain at their current school through the Schools of Choice process and guidelines.
  • Students who withdraw from divisional programs will be directed to return to their designated schools at a natural transition point in the year as approved by the assistant superintendent of human resources with consideration given to the program, grade of the student and the enrollment at affected schools.
