River East Collegiate’s English department offers a full variety of courses designed to meet provincial standards and outcomes while appealing to students with diverse interests and educational goals. English department staff are diverse in their areas of interest as well, providing students with opportunities to explore poetry, plays, novels, journalism, social issues, media and film. Students will experience diverse writing opportunities ranging from formal essays, editorials, and research-based articles to less formal and more creative forms of writing in form of stories, scripts and poetry. To encourage creative writing and journalism, teachers in the English department sponsor extracurricular writing opportunities such as the Writers’ Club, the SCOPE school newspaper, and “The Search for the REC Author Writing Contest."
