Valley Gardens Middle School Home Economics
All students will take Home Ec. Students in grade 6 will complete a third of the year (1 term) in the Textiles Component (traditionally call “Sewing”) and in Grade 7 the same amount of time will be spent in the Foods and Nutrition Room.
Home Economics is an applied or practical arts course, designed to teach students practical, everyday money saving skills. They are also provided with an outlet for individuality, creativity and an environment in which to have fun, but at the same time learn valuable lifelong skills.
A brief outline of topics and projects covered at each grade level are as follows:
Grade 6
Why learn to sew?
Safety
Sewing equipment
Machine parts and operation
Basic hand sewing and button attachment
Seams, seam finishes and reverse stitching
Projects include a drawstring gym bag and pair of pj/boxer shorts
Grade 7
Safety
Prevention of food poisoning
Measurement of ingredients
Food preparation equipment
Canada’s Food guide to healthy living
Table setting and manners
Recipes we will cook include pizza buns, muffins, French toast, pancakes, tacos and Coney islands
Grade 8
Review of grade 6 sewing skills and safety
Reading and understanding pattern instructions
Sewing in a zipper
Embroidery machine use
Main textiles project will be duffel bag
Food safety
Nutrients and their functions
Fast food
Recipes we will cook include lasagna, stir fry, casseroles, perogies and pizza
