Technology Education /Applied Arts

Technology Education/Applied Arts at Robert Andrews provides students with a venue to develop and practice various essential skills for daily living. The Applied Arts labs offer an area unique in educational settings to foster creativity and growth throughout the students’ lives.

Applied Arts is compulsory for all students. The allotted class time is split evenly with Industrial Arts and Home Economics.

The different grades will develop and progress their skills in the following areas:


Home Economics

Home Economics is an applied or practical arts course, designed to teach students practical, everyday skills. They are also provided with an outlet for individuality; creativity and collaboration in an environment which they have fun, but at the same time learn lifelong skills.


 Foods and Nutrition

  • Safety in food preparation
  • Measuring techniques
  • Canada’s Food Guide
  • Portion size
  • Leavening agents
  • Food safety
  • Working as a kitchen group


Clothing and Textiles

  • Working safely with sewing equipment
  • Basic hand stitches
  • Machine intro, parts and operation
  • Basic use of an iron
  • Seams, seam finishing and reverse stitching
  • Completion of a sewing project
