Health & Safety

School Visitors
To ensure the safety of our students, all parents/guardians, volunteers and visitors must report to the office by entering the front doors of our school. Visitors sign in and out, and are asked to wear a visitor's tag. Most entrances to our school are locked during school hours as part of our safety program.

School Patrols
Patrols are on duty at crossing points approximately 10 minutes before school, at lunchtime and at dismissal. We expect all patrols to be at their posts on time and wearing their special vests. School patrols are student volunteers. Click the "Patrol Handbook" link on the left-hand side for more information.School personnel are not permitted to administer non-prescription medications.

Playground Supervision
Our staff is on duty from 8:45 a.m. to 8:55 a.m., as well as at both recesses. For the safety of our students, please do not drop off your child(ren) before 8:45a.m. as there will be no supervision on school grounds.

Dispensing of Medications/Medical Concerns
Prescription medication may be administered only when the required divisional forms have been filled out and must be brought to the school office by a parent/caregiver in the original container from the pharmacy. The appropriate forms are available at the school office.
Parents are asked to let us know about any special medical concerns, problems, or medical procedures that students may have.
Please click the link for administering medications for more information.

Allergies
There are students who have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts/peanut products. We request that no peanut products be brought into the school at any time. This includes peanut butter, cookies, cakes, and any other items that may contain peanuts.

Accident Procedure
In case of an accident, we proceed as follows:

  • Minor cuts or abrasions: treated by staff (ie: ice for bumps, band-aids for scrapes, etc).
  • Serious accidents: Parents or emergency contacts are immediately called to have the child picked up. In an emergency we may take the child to the nearest hospital, or call an ambulance.
  • Voluntary Student Accident Insurance form

Fire Drills/Lockdown Drills
Fire department regulations state that all schools must hold 10 fire drills per school year. These drills are taken seriously, and all students are trained to exit the school in a safe and timely manner. The RETSD requires that all schools practice 2 lockdown drills per year as well.

Bus Evacuation
We hold 2 bus evacuation drills each school year.

Communicable Diseases
Occasionally there are cases of communicable diseases occur in our school. Head lice, pink eye, scabies and other skin infections require treatment to prevent the spread to other children.

Weather conditions & outdoor activities
Click this link for Cold Weather Guidelines. Mittens, toques, warm jackets, snow pants, and boots will help keep the chill off while students enjoy their time outside.
Click this link for Hot Weather Information. Hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent will help keep students protected while they enjoy their time outside in the warmer weather.

Please send your child with weather appropriate outerwear, so they will be prepared no matter what the weather happens to be. Many items look similar, so please make sure all belongings are labelled to avoid confusion or misplaced items.

Although we regularly remind students to stay out of the water or melty snow, often socks and pants get wet during recess times. It is a good idea to have an extra set of mittens and clothes (shirt, pants, socks, underwear) in your child’s backpack in case clothing gets wet during the school day.
