RETSD Explores Play Therapy

Both Hampstead and Polson Schools have been exploring weekly play therapy to support a few selected students.

When children play, they communicate things we may not otherwise discover through more traditional forms of therapy that require speaking. Play therapy has a long history and is used by therapists and school divisions throughout Canada and the world.

It involves a dynamic interpersonal relationship between a trained play therapist and a child. The play therapist facilitates the development of a safe relationship for the child to fully express and explore self through their natural means of communication, which is play.

Just as an adult would talk out their feelings and problems, play therapy provides a space for a child to play out their feelings and problems. In creating an emotionally safe therapeutic relationship, problem resolution for the child can be achieved.

“Our students have greatly benefited from play therapy,” says Polson principal Pamela Alexander. “Students receiving this service have a safe outlet for expressing their feelings and have grown in their sense of safety, belonging, and confidence. This has also translated in an improvement in academic and social-emotional outcomes.”

The goal of play therapy is for students to develop self-acceptance and a better understanding of their feelings. It ultimately empowers the student to overcome and resolve challenges in their life.

“My daughter has been taking part in play therapy for a while now and I’ve seen a noticeable difference in her communication skills,” says one RETSD parent. “Since being in play therapy she’s learned how to put her thoughts into words and better express herself. Now, when she struggles, I notice her take a deep breath and try to focus on what she wants to say. It has also helped build her confidence. I’m grateful she’s been able to take part in this service.”
