Safety/Emergencies
Emergency Closure/Evacuation
If it is necessary to close schools and/or cancel transportation because of severe weather conditions, the following procedure will be followed:
- The decision to close schools and/or cancel transportation will be made by the superintendent in consultation with the chair of the board and the director of transportation.
- The decision will be communicated to the media.
Parents/guardians are asked to listen to these stations/channels for information on school closures and/or the cancellation of transportation:
CBC AM 990/FM 98.3, CKMM FM Hot 103.1, CJOB AM 680, GROOVE 94.3, CJKR POWER FM 97, CITI FM 92.1, CFWM 99.9 BOB FM, CLEAR FM 102.3 and CITY TV and CTV
In the event that Sherwood staff and students would need to be evacuated from the school during the school day, we would take the children to the Morse Place Community Club or if unavailable, to Salisbury Morse Place School. Parents would be contacted by phone as soon as possible.
We ask that families have an emergency plan for their children should an emergency closure/evacuation be needed during the day. Please determine ahead of time what alternate arrangements would need to be made for your child, if you are unavailable. Please ensure that all emergency contact information is updated in the school office.
Information regarding school division policies for inclement weather can be found at web.retsd.mb.ca.
Parent/Guardian Information
If, during the school year, you have changes in information regarding your child, whether it is work or home phone numbers, address or babysitter information, please contact the office so that our records will be current at all times. These numbers are extremely important to keep current as we need to have up-to-date information in case of an emergency.
Parking/Stopping
Please note the NO PARKING signs in front of the school on both sides of the street. In particular, please avoid dropping off your children near the crosswalk in front of the school. The staff parking lot is also not a "drop-off zone". Staff arrive at various times throughout the day and it is a safety concern to have children walking through the parking lot. If you are dropping off your children, the Morse Place Community Club parking lot at the southeast corner of the school yard provides easy and safe access to the school yard.
Patrols
Each year grade 4 and 5 students are given the opportunity to train as school safety patrols. Street patrols are on duty from 8:50 to 9:05; 12:00 to 12:10; 12:50 to 1:00 and 3:40 to 3:50. The role of the school safety patrol is to assist children as they cross the streets. Sherwood School is located close to some very busy streets and the role of the street patrol is very important to help ensure your child's safety. You can reinforce the safety expectations by reminding your children to cross with the safety patrol when going across the street.
Playground
The playground area is divided into two areas, during the school day cycle children will alternate being on play area 1 and play area 2. Supervision is provided on both areas by teaching staff and paraprofessionals. During the lunch hour the lunch supervisors are on duty to ensure that your children are safe. If parents need to see their child during an outdoor recess period they are asked to contact the office so that we can have their child meet them inside. While playing outside children are expected to follow our school expectations for safe play. Please refer to the school handbook for all behavioural expectations.
Visitor Sign-in
The safety of our students is always our primary concern at Sherwood, for this reason we ask all parents and visitors to our school, during school hours, to check in at the office. If you have arranged alternate pickup for your child, please contact us by phone or through a note in the agenda. We regard these procedures as safety issues and appreciate your understanding and co-operation. Parents waiting for their children at the entrance at dismissal times are not asked to check in at the office.
