Health and Well-being

Student Accident Insurance

Voluntary student insurance may be obtained from the Reliable Life Insurance Company. This plan is recommended by the Manitoba Association of School Trustees. It is administered by Reed Stenhouse Limited and should be purchased directly through them with applications forms distributed by the school each September.

Public Health Nurse

Radisson School students have access to the service of a public health nurse on an on-call basis.

Administration of Medication

School personnel are not permitted to administer non-prescription medication. Prescription drugs can be administered only with parental permission and provided the required forms have been completed.  The appropriate forms and information are available at the school office or on this website under Documents and Forms (General Information).  These forms must be completed each year. Please note that the school cannot administer the first dose of any medication.

Download the appropriate forms and/or information.

Nutrition Policy

Radisson School will continue to promote healthy eating and active living through our food programs, nutrition education and physical education.  We will ensure that all decisions involving food and drink at Radisson School will be carried out in the best interests of our children and our school community needs.  Our continuing education will incorporate Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating and the Manitoba Physical Education/Health Education Curriculum and will encourage the eating of nutritional foods during classroom and school functions.

  • Fundraising in the school will not rely on the sale of non-nutritious foods.
  • School community members will be encouraged to bring/send food belonging to one or more of the four food groups of Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating for class parties, recess snacks and lunches.
  • School groups will be encouraged to offer healthy lunch choices on special lunch days.
  • Students will be encouraged to bring healthy snacks and lunches as it is guaranteed that healthy eating has a positive influence on a child’s day.
  • Food selections will/must omit foods outlined in Regulation JLCG-R2 - Anaphylaxis Avoidance Strategies.
  • Radisson School will continue to promote active living choices throughout the school year.

Note:  Both gum and sunflower seeds will not be allowed at Radisson because of the “untidiness” they leave in our environment both inside and outside the school.

Anaphylaxis Policy Regarding Nut Allergies

River East Transcona School Division has had policies regarding anaphylaxis procedure and avoidance strategies in place since 2005. A program has been implemented that is designed to reduce the risks for children with allergies, while at school. This program includes:

  • Awareness and education regarding life-threatening allergies for all involved with the child.
  • Avoidance strategies to prevent the child from coming in contact with allergens that pose a risk.
  • Planning for emergency situations.
  • Training in emergency procedures.
  • Although we cannot guarantee complete avoidance of allergenic foods in schools, as there can be hidden or accidentally introduced sources, it is the division’s and Radisson’s goal to reduce exposure as much as possible in an effort to provide a safe environment for our children.

Therefore, at Radisson, we are asking that parents do not send lunches or snacks to school that may contain peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oil, nuts and/or products containing them.

Thank you for your diligence in following through with this precaution.

Communicable Diseases

Communicable diseases such as chicken pox, head lice, impetigo and pink eye do occur in schools.

In the case of head lice, an information pamphlet is sent to every member of a class where the lice was found. It uses current information from the Province of Manitoba Department of Health and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority describing how to identify and control the spread of head lice. It is parent's responsibility to treat and check your child for this condition. In the case of pink eye, impetigo, etc., children should be treated by a doctor and parents should obtain medical confirmation that attendance at school is not a health risk to others.
