Student Safety
Fire Drills and Other Emergency Preparedness
Each school year, ten fire drills are conducted at Lord Wolseley School. As well, two lockdown drills are conducted during the school year. Parents will be notified prior to a practice of lockdown procedures.
Emergency School Closure
In the event that the school is closed early due to an emergency, students will be relocated to John Henderson Junior High at 930 Brazier (corner of Brazier and Leighton) or to Angus McKay School at 850 Woodvale. Parents will be contacted as soon as possible. Please be sure your child has an alternative place to go in the event you are not home during an emergency school closure.
Parking Lot and Stopping Restrictions
Please protect our students’ safety. Parents who drop off their children are reminded to observe the street signs regarding the no stopping and no parking zones and the drop/pick-up zone. Some of our students are transported to and from school by bus. Please do not stop or park in the area designated for buses as this causes an unsafe situation on Leighton for students and vehicles. We also ask that parents do not use the parking lot as a drop off/pick up zone.
Safety Patrols
All patrols receive an extensive training program through Lord Wolseley School and the Winnipeg Police Service. Bus patrols receive their training directly from River East Transcona School Division Transportation Department.
Street patrols are on duty at the following times, weather permitting:
- 8:40 a.m. - 8:55 a.m.
- 11:45 a.m. - 11:55 a.m.
- 12:35 p.m. - 12:45 p.m.
- 3:25 p.m. - 3:40 p.m.
They are stationed at the corners of Leighton and Henderson Highway and at Leighton and Brazier. They are also stationed at the parking lot.
Bus patrols are provided by Lord Wolseley School to help provide a safer ride for the bus students. These patrols assist with lining students up, loading and unloading of the bus and assisting the driver as needed. Additionally, the bus patrols meet kindergarten bus students at the classroom and escort them to the bus.
Extreme weather guidelines for student street patrols
During extremely cold weather, the following guidelines for an abbreviated student patrol schedule will be followed:
Windchill
-27 to -34 It is recommended that time on post not exceed 10 minutes. Warm clothing is essential. Facial protection is recommended.
-35 to -40 It is recommended that time on post not exceed 5 minutes. Warm clothing and facial protection is essential.
Below -40 No student patrols on post.
Visitors
All visitors to the school are required to report to the school office. All visitors within the school are required to sign a school register and wear a visitor tag.
To help protect student and staff safety, all doors will be locked between 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. and from 12:50 p.m. onward, except for the main front door (southwest door) on Leighton Ave. This helps ensure that all visitors report to the office.
Volunteers
Lord Wolseley School encourages parents to be involved as volunteers in the school. All volunteers are required to complete a child abuse registry check and pledge of confidentiality form. All volunteers are asked to sign in at the office and wear a volunteer nametag while volunteering at the school.
Playground Use After School
To ensure student safety, students are expected to go straight home from school at dismissal times. Once they have reported home and have parental permission, they may return to the school grounds after 4 p.m. Where possible, parents are asked to accompany their children to ensure their safety. Only students who are accompanied by a parent/guardian may play on the structure between 3:30 and 4 p.m.
