Student Leadership

Students Without Borders - " Be the Change" - UNESCO Associated Schools Leadership

Students Without Borders is John Pritchard's active citizenship group. We are students dedicated to trying to make the world a better place. We want to “think globally and act locally”. We work on fundraisers, events and promotional activities to spread awareness about the issues and situations we wish to change. For example, we have had many food drives for our local Winnipeg Harvest, while at the same time we sponsor a child in Africa. We also organize a 30 Hour famine which helps both children in Africa and Winnipeg Harvest. Many of the students in this group have the opportunity to attend leadership conferences throughout the year. Students Without Borders acts upon the four UNESCO pillars of knowledge: “Learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning to live together”.

Patrols

The patrols at John Pritchard School are chosen every year based on their ability to be responsible, kind and have leadership abilities. They must show certain leadership qualities, such as, arriving at their post everyday, on time and in the appropriate uniform.

There is one locations where John Pritchard patrols would like to assist students – the intersection of Henderson Highway and Whellams Lane has four patrols. We also have two lunch patrols that assist students across the street that are going home for lunch and coming back to school after lunch.

Patrols are required to always wear a fluorescent yellow vest and an orange flag, which is supplied to them through the school.

After the squad is chosen, all patrols attend a training session presented to them by a police officer from the Winnipeg Police Service. The officer maintains a constant relationship with the patrols throughout the year by following up on any concerns regarding unsafe behaviour from both pedestrians and drivers.

Being a patrol requires giving up a lot of your own time and being on duty during all types of weather. A patrol must be alert and focused. As a result of this commitment, John Pritchard School, River East Transcona School Division, the Winnipeg Police Service and the community often reward the patrols for a job well done. Patrols are treated to a roller-skating morning at Wheelies twice a year, free movies at Silver City, McDonald's breakfasts and coupons, discounted tickets from the Manitoba Moose and Winnipeg Goldeyes, and free passes to Wesmen basketball and volleyball games. As a year-end windup, all patrols are treated to a full day of activities sometime in June.

If being a patrol is something you think you would like to do, make sure you let your teacher know when you are in either Grade 5 or 6. We would love to have you join our team and help ensure all students get to and from school safely.

Yearbook Committee

The Yearbook Committee is a fantastic opportunity for students to put their creativity and leadership skills to good use! Students who join this committee are involved in all aspects of the planning and creation of the JP Yearbook, including theme, format and layout of the book. Many different talents are required to produce a book that the student body can call their own. So, if you have a way with words, a good eye for design, or a creative edge, then come on out and help us record this year’s piece of John Pritchard history!
