Curriculum

Emerson School offers the English language curriculum from kindergarten to Grade 5. Daily basic French instruction begins in Grade 4. The regular curricular programs are enhanced through a wide variety of enrichment and extracurricular experiences, such as field trips, guest artists, special presentations, and cross-grade “buddies” for reading and mathematics. We have regular opportunities for our students to learn together in cross-grade teams (PALS). Our goal is for students to learn and develop the skills of contributing to the group, to the school, to their community, and to the world.

Emerson celebrates the arts, providing venues for students to develop and showcase dramatic/musical/choral/artistic talents (e.g., school musical, musical programs/events, art club, special assemblies, participating in the Winnipeg Music Festival, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and showcasing art in our “Art from the Heart” student art gallery).

Emerson provides a strong intramural sports program for students to participate in lunch hour and extracurricular sports (e.g., Turkey Trot, gymnastics club, volleyball tournament, basketball tournament, curling, and run club).

School Programming

Basic French — French instruction for 35 minutes, four times per cycle for Grades 4 and 5.

Computer lab — A program of instruction to develop technology and information literacy skills to assist in the learning of all subject areas.

Extracurricular programs/clubs — These programs are run on a voluntary basis by the staff before school, at noon hour, and after school. Activities include: gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, run club, etc.

Field trips and consent forms — Student participation in the curriculum-linked, out-of-school excursions that take place throughout the year is encouraged. Written parental consent on the school division consent form is required in order for the student to participate. A handwritten note is no longer acceptable.

Library — The teacher librarian and classroom teachers work together to implement resource-based learning. The library also provides print material for students to borrow for home use. 

Resource program — Resource teachers facilitate, support, and assist classroom teachers in assessing learning strengths and weaknesses and in delivering effective educational programming for learners with diverse needs.
