Respect in RETSD Schools & Sport

Over the next few months, River East Transcona staff and volunteers will take part in online training in co-operation with the province and Respect Group, an organization that aims to empower people to recognize and prevent bullying, abuse, harassment, and discrimination.

In 2017, RETSD was the first division in the province to ensure all its staff took part in training developed by Respect Group.

Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning has mandated that those who work in the kindergarten to Grade 12 school system complete Respect in School online training. As well, all coaches of school sports and phys-ed teachers must complete Respect in Sport training prior to starting to coach school sports or shortly thereafter. The online training helps create safer, more respectful schools by educating staff and volunteers on how to understand and better respond to difficult situations.

“It’s very positive to see the government demonstrate an enhanced commitment to safe environments for all students and athletes,” says Catherine Schinkel, RETSD’s director of human resources. “We’ve had a relationship with Respect Group for several years and look forward to working with them again on this important initiative.”
