Ukrainian Students Celebrate Kolyada

Students from the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program, along with parents, friends, school staff, and special guests, gathered at Chief Peguis Middle School on January 26 to celebrate the Ukrainian holiday of Kolyada.

The cold of the Winnipeg winter dissipated when everyone filled the school theatre to listen to the students joyfully sing koliyadky (carols) and offer well wishes for the New Year. The program began with the patriotic song “Oi u luzi chervona kalyna” (the Red Viburnum in the Meadow), a piece that offers hope that Ukraine will soon be free once more.

The students sang traditional carols well into the evening and warmed the hearts of all in attendance. Following the concert, all the guests enjoyed fellowship and snacks in the gym. Many thanks to Pani Sovinska for organizing the festivities. Š’сŠµ Š±ŃƒŠ“Šµ Š£ŠŗрŠ°Ń—Š½Š°!
