Sometimes, severe weather causes us to cancel buses.
The general rule is that if the wind chill is -45 C or colder at The Forks (as posted by Environment Canada at about 6:10 a.m.), we cancel buses for the whole day but schools usually remain open. All metro Winnipeg school divisions follow one system, based on this rule.
We will post an alert message on this website home page, if buses are cancelled. Major radio stations and local television stations will also announce busing cancellations (they usually broadcast cancellations about every 15 minutes).
IF BY 6:45 A.M. WE HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED OR POSTED A CANCELLATION ALERT, BUSES ARE RUNNING.
There's no need to call our transportation office or Administration Offices. Simply access information as outlined above.
Transportation Cancellation Procedures
In the event of severe weather, this procedure will be followed:
- The decision to cancel buses and/or close schools will be made by the superintendent in consultation with the director of transportation.
- The decision to close, if it is made, will be conveyed to the transportation supervisor in Sunrise School Division for its students who are transported to River East Transcona schools.
- Everyone is asked to check our website home page or listen to the media for announcements regarding bus cancellations and/or school closures.
- If it is necessary to close schools, or bus students home early during the school day because of severe weather, schools will be contacted by phone by the superintendent's department. If transportation is cancelled in the morning, this cancellation will apply for the whole day.
