Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning all Sherwood School students are invited to come to school at 8:30 a.m. to enjoy breakfast. The breakfast, usually toast, cereal, juice, milk and fruit, is prepared and served by volunteers from St. Saviour's and Crosspoint Community Churches. Parents/guardians are asked to complete a signed permission slip that will be kept on file for the whole year. This is a drop-in program and is open to all students in Grades K-5. Permission slips are available under documents & forms or from the school office.
Concert Choir Grades 1-3 and 4-5
This ensemble focuses on vocal training through both classical music and that of popular classics. All students participate in at least one concert choir.
Physical Education Activities
Students from grades 1-5 have the opportunity to participate in intramurals once every 6-day cycle at recess. Every month there is a different activity for the students to play such as basketball/bouncing, skipping, volleyball, free time, and tag.
Students in grades 3-5 can attend run club which is held in the mornings before school during the fall and spring months. Those students who attend regularly are invited to attend a divisional fun run which is held in October.
In some years students will have the opportunity to participate in Skip Club learning tricks to do with short, long and 2 ropes. Skipping is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that gets the heart pumping and uses many muscles and bones.
Students have many opportunities to take part in divisional events held throughout the year. Cross country is held for grades 3-5 in October, the tumbling rally is held in March for Grades 3-4, Grade 4 has zone handball and Grade 5 has mini-handball in April, folkdance is held at a park for Grades 1-3 in May and the divisional Grade 5 track meet is held in June.
Students participate in an all-day field day practicing their skills at many stations set up inside and outside.
Students sometimes have the opportunity to play in a soccer tournament held all day at a school in the division in May.
Terry Fox Run
Every year in September/October, Sherwood School takes part in the Terry Fox Run and also raises money for cancer research. The whole school walks/runs on behalf of Terry Fox and learns about his journey across Canada.
Students in Grade 5 participate in a half-day volleyball tournament at Hampstead School in November. When needed, the Grade 4 classes have also been included to assist on a team.
