Manitoba-Hamburg Exchange 2018-2019 - 39 Years of Exchange from 1979-2018

History – Agreement renewed in 2016 and originally signed by representatives of Manitoba Government, River East/ Transcona School Division, Principals of River East Collegiate, John Taylor Collegiate and Westgate Mennonite Collegiate in Hamburg with representatives of the City State of Hamburg and the Federal State of Lower Saxony

As of 2014 all Manitoba students are matched with students from Hamburg only.

Exchange Timeline

  • January 12, 2018 – All applications due with non-refundable cheque for $350.
  • End of February – Partners are matched
  • March – Partnerships confirmed and email contact established
  • May 22, 2018 – 7:00 p.m. Informational Meeting at Westgate – Bring copy of passport
  • Tentative August 24, 2018 - arrival of German students
  • September 12-14th,  – Camp Cedarwood for all Exchange partners
  • October, 2018– The Forks Scavenger Hunt with dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory
  • October, 2018 - Blue Bombers Game
  • November, 2018 – Farewell Party at Across the Board 
  • Week of Nov. 20th– departure of German Students
  • January 16, 2019 - Second meeting – must have copy of passport and health form
  • March 21, 2019 Tentative departure of Canadian students
  • Mid May, 2019 Canadian Students invited to Berlin for 4 days
  • June 15, 2019 Likely return of Canadian students

Financial Information

  • $350 nonrefundable cheque paid for Canadian exchange activities (Camp Cedarwood, Hoodie, Bomber Game, Scavenger Hunt/Dinner and Farewell Party
  • oen cheque of $600 due at the May 22nd meeting and $1400 postdated cheque for Aug. 31, 2018
  • these cheques cover the airline ticket, seat selection and chaperone flights
  • if airline ticket costs are higher, then the remainder will be collected on January 15, 2019
  • approximately 380 Euros for 4 days and nights in Berlin to be paid on January 16, 2019
  • students should have money available for personal spending and any extra travel costs (for example visiting friends by train)

Sprachdiplom - International Credentials for German Language Proficiency

The RETSD English-German Bilingual Program offers its students the opportunity to obtain an internationally accredited diploma of German language proficiency, the Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD). The DSD is a series of German language assessments developed and monitored by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) of Germany. The DSD assess German skills in key areas: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The DSD assessments are coordinated by and conducted in RETSD schools.

DSD assessments are offered at three proficiency levels (aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR).

  • Level A2 - Zentrale Deutschprüfung (ZDP) A2
    • For all students in the German Bilingual program, Grade 6
    • Certifies that a student has attained the level of A2 - Basic User: can communicate in simple and routine tasks exchange information on familiar and routine matters. 
  • Level B1 - Deutsches Sprachdiplom I (DSD I)
    • Opportunity offered to students in the German Bilingual program, Grade 9.
    • Certifies that a student has attained the level of B1 - Intermediate Independent User: can communicate simply and clearly on a range of topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
    • Meets language requirements (B1) for foreign student admission to technical college in Germany.
  • Level B2/C1 - Deutsches Sprachdiplom II (DSD II)
    • Opportunity offered to students in the German Bilingual program, Grade 12
    • Certifies that a student has attained level B2 or C1:
      • B2 - Advanced Independent User: can communicate clearly with considerable fluency and spontaneity on a wide range of subjects.
      • C1 - Proficient User: can communicate fluently and spontaneously, using language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
    • Meets language requirements for foreign student admission to universities in Germany.
    • Meets language requirements for admission to advanced German courses in Canadian universities.

To obtain the Deutsches Sprachdiplom II diploma students need to demonstrate that they have the following skills:

    • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics.
    • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible.
    • Can produce a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.
    • Can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Sprachdiplom structure throughout the school year:

  • DSD II (B2/C1) - Grade 12
    • Deadline for registration: September
    • Dates: Written portion: December
  • DSD I (B1) - Grade 9
    • Deadline for registration: January
    • Dates: Written portion: March
  • ZDP A2 - Grade 6
    • Deadline for registration: April
    • Dates: Oral and written portions: April/May

Registration

  • Registration is free of change for students in the RETSD German Bilingual program.
  • DSD I and DSD II registrants must submit a $50 deposit to reserve a place. This deposit is refundable in full when the two-part assessment is completed.
