River East Collegiate
River East Transcona School Division
Advanced Placement

River East Collegiate was one of the first schools in Manitoba to offer Advanced Placement, and as such is a flagship school for this program in western Canada.

Advanced Placement, as the name implies, is an enriched program of studies which not only prepares students for the rigors of university and college life, but also gives students the opportunity to earn university credits and advanced standing at university while still in high school.

* Benefit: Students gain university credit while in high school saving overall university costs.

These courses are more challenging and demanding than regular high school courses, and as such require a greater time commitment.  As one would expect, the workload tends to be heavier as well.

* Benefit: Students learn to study smarter and to become efficient time managers.

River East offers students the opportunity to take the following courses which can lead to university credit or advanced standing:
• Calculus
• English Literature and Composition
• German Language
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Computer Science

Students have also gained university credits through individual study courses and exams in:
• Human Geography
• Studio Art
• Environmental Science
• Music Theory

Advanced Placement  students can choose to register for all advanced placement courses offered at REC, or as many as they are interested in taking.

* Benefit: students need only take AP courses they are interested in.

For example a student who is only interested in English, can register for only AP English, and regular classes for the others.

Once in River East Collegiate, these are the paths students take moving towards the AP exam written at the beginning of May in the Grade 12 year:
