This fall, the division and our schools are having to make decisions we never had to consider before the COVID-19 pandemic. One such decision concerns the sports programming schools typically offer outside school hours, in addition to physical education classes.
Letters were sent home to senior years families yesterday letting them know the schools have decided to not hold extracurricular sports activities for this semester. This difficult decision was made after considerable discussion among the senior years teams and was based on the need to safeguard the well-being of their entire school community.
We know how much these activities mean to our students and families, but the health and safety of our communities cannot be compromised. Extracurricular sports would result in mixing cohorts. We realize this may occur in the community, but as the infection rate continues to rise in Winnipeg, our schools believe they have a responsibility to prevent this situation themselves as much as possible.
The schools and the division are committed to physical activity as an integral part of the well-being of our students, and our schools continue to offer physical education classes, adapted to meet public health guidelines. We are confident that extracurricular sports will return to our division as soon as this can be done with minimal risk to all our students and community.
