Kildonan-East Collegiate celebrated the completion of a new outdoor Indigenous learning space yesterday by raising a tipi on the front lawn of the school. The 20-foot tipi is the final stage in creating the space, which includes a traditional learning circle and Indigenous medicine garden.
The project was led by the First Nations Together student leadership group at KEC, and they spoke at the celebration about the purpose of the tipi and their experiences in creating the learning space. They also raised the tipi, along with students from the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies class.
The tipi will stay up until the end of the school year and will be raised at various times going forward as a learning and gathering space.
