High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP)

June 19, 2017

Image result for tools clip artThe River East Transcona School Division has a strong focus on providing students with more comprehensive career development opportunities that meet Manitoba's current and future labour needs. One such program is the High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP), this program allows students to learn career and technical skills while still in high school.

The High School Apprenticeship Program is an extension of Apprenticeship Manitoba's existing apprenticeship program but allows students to start working in their trade while enrolled in high school. This provides students 16 years of age and older with the opportunity to:

  • Learn a skilled trade
  • Earn high school credits (110hrs = 40S credit)
  • Collect hours toward trade certification
  • Earn tuition incentives to continue their technical training upon graduation
  • Apply their on-the-job training hours to continued, full-time apprenticeship after graduation
  • Earn an income in school - employers pay HSAP students minimum wage plus 10 per cent

High School Apprenticeship is a great opportunity for students who:

  • Are interested in a career in the skilled trades
  • Are enrolled in either academic or vocational programming
  • Have parents working in a skilled trade

We know Manitoba's skilled, certified tradespeople play a vital role in our society. In the next decade retirements will leave Manitoba with severe shortages in the skilled trades. HSAP offers students the opportunity to begin their careers early while addressing the upcoming skilled labour shortages.
