Curriculum

Music

École Margaret-Underhill offers a music program delivered by a music specialist who works half time. Students in Grades 1 to 4 participate in a music program (two periods per cycle) and a choir program (one period per cycle). Kindergarten students receive music instruction in class along with instruction by a music specialist once per cycle. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop skills in performing, reading, creating, listening to, and describing music. As well, students are given the opportunity to experience playing percussion (Orff) instruments. Formal lessons in recorder commence in Grade 3. Appreciation of music is viewed as the universal language of childhood. Students perform at assemblies and concerts with great emphasis on public speaking and the performing arts. Yearly outings to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra are offered to Grades 3 and 4.

Physical Education Program

ÉMU provides a very active physical education program incorporating leadership and intramural programs. Our top-quality program provides four instructional periods per six-day cycle. Every year, our Grade 4 students have the opportunity to develop strong leadership skills through a leadership program delivered by our physical education teacher. The Grade 4 students officiate activities for other grade levels. The noon-hour intramural program features a variety of activities throughout the year, which can include but are not limited to: soccer, cross-country running and skiing, handball, track and field, Grade 1 and 2 activity centres, folk dancing, gymnastics, skating, and flag football. Our leadership motto: Leaders Are Made!
