We at River East Transcona School Division, along with all Canadians, are saddened by the recent tragic news of the discovery of the mass grave of 215 children's remains on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.
We acknowledge the families and community of Tk'emlúps te Secwe̓pemc First Nation and join in mourning the loss of their children.
As part of our division's continued commitment to honouring the victims of residential schools and forging a path towards reconciliation and nation-to-nation bonding, RETSD (supported by Manitoba Education) will fly flags at half-staff for 215 hours. This is in recognition of each of the 215 Indigenous children whose remains were discovered at the residential school.
This action has been guided by Treaty 1 Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Flags will remain at half-staff, day and night, including the weekend, until the end of the day June 8, 2021.
The Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience—call 1-866-925-4419.
