The English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program (EUBP) spans from kindergarten to Grade 8. BWCS runs a multi-grade pull-out program model that is currently staffed by two teachers in the following configurations:
• K-3 • Grades 4-8
Students in the EUBP are taught the following curriculum areas in Ukrainian: Ukrainian language arts, social studies and health.
Students can enter the EUBP at either kindergarten or grade 1.
The English Ukrainian Bilingual Program at BWCS is a student-centered program. As second or third language learners the students need to be considered with their unique needs, characteristics and influences in mind. Elements such as a previous knowledge and experience with Ukrainian language are not as prominent in the students currently enrolled in the program.
Regardless of their cultural background, core EUBP subjects are taught with an eye to understanding the Ukrainian culture in a multicultural global society. The strategies, topics and themes that are used in the classrooms are directly drawn from and connected to the Manitoba provincial curricula. A wide variety of books and materials, recommended by English-Ukrainian program curriculum and the Languages Other than English consultant are used to engage students in learning activities.
Students in the EUBP also participate in many cultural events such as: musical performances, carolling at Kildonan Place, perogy lunch, Koliada, an Easter breakfast with Springfield Heights, and Pysanky with Chief Peguis.
