Q: I have gone for medical treatment for a workplace injury and have submitted the OHAF to my supervisor - What do I do now?

A: It is extremely important that incident reporting procedure is followed correctly, completely and in a timely manner in this situation, especially if medical treatment is being sought for a workplace injury. (See Q: I am injured at work - What do I do?)


A workplace injury is handled much differently than an injury or illness occurring outside the workplace.


All employees, meaning both teaching and support staff, are expected to follow our procedure and participate in the divisional Return to Work Program.


The divisional Return to Work program is a process where if an employee is injured at work, the school division will generally offer other work to the employee, modified to accommodate any physical restrictions as specified in the completed occupational health assessment form. The intent is to safely transition employees back to regular duties as quickly as possible.


So, here is what the process looks like for teachers and support staff...



 Teachers

  1. ​Follow the reporting process and provide the Occupational Health Assessment Form (OHAF) to your management supervisor.

  2. Since teachers are not insured under the Workers Compensation Board or Manitoba (WCB).

  3. Work time loss wages or salary for teachers is drawn on accumulated sick time benefits.

  4. Other medical supports for teachers are through the employees health plan benefits plan

  5. A doctor's illness note / certificate is not applicable in a workplace injury situation, since the employee is injured and not ill.

  6. The division needs and expects that a completed OHAF, complete with physical restrictions defined, will guide the process of developing a return to work plan appropriate to the situation.

  7. The division will not reimburse any fees if the physician does not fill in the physical capabilities section of the form, so make sure when you receive it from your physician, it is complete.

  8. Employees injured at work are expected to participate in the return to work process and return to work under conditions that are safe and within physical capabilities.


 Support Staff
