River East Transcona School Division
creating student success

We offer education in four languages – English, French, German and Ukrainian – and also offer courses in Japanese and Spanish.

We offer both basic French and French immersion.

Basic French is available in Grades 4–12 across the division.

French immersion allows our students to study French more intensely and graduate with the ability to fluently speak, read, and write in both English and French.

Our dual-track schools offer both English and French immersion programming, while our four French milieu schools have only French immersion.

Students enter the French immersion program in kindergarten or Grade 1, or have the option of late entry into the program in Grade 6 at Munroe Junior High School. In Grade 12, students have the opportunity to obtain an international credential of French language proficiency (Diplôme d'etudes en langue française or DELF), which qualifies them to study at French-speaking universities in Europe.

Our dual-track French immersion schools are:

  • Neil Campbell School (K–5)
  • Salisbury Morse Place School (K–5)
  • Springfield Heights School (K–5)
  • Sun Valley School (K–5)
  • John Henderson (6–8)
  • Munroe Junior High School (6–8—Late Entry)
  • Miles Macdonell Collegiate (9–12)

Our French milieu schools are:

  • École Centrale (K–4)
  • École Margaret-Underhill (K–4)
  • École Regent Park School (5–8)
  • Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau (9–12)

The English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program begins in kindergarten and continues through to Grade 8.

The program gives our students the opportunity to become proficient in both Ukrainian and English. After Grade 9, (Grade 8 as of September 2014) students may write "challenge exams" offered through Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning to receive high school accreditation.

Schools offering the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program are:

  • Springfield Heights School (K–5)
  • Bernie Wolfe Community School (K–8)
  • Chief Peguis Junior High (6–8)

We offer the only English-German Bilingual Program in Winnipeg.

German language studies begin in kindergarten and can continue through to Grade 12. Students have the opportunity to obtain an international credential of German language proficiency (Deutsches Sprachdiplom), which qualifies them to study at university in Germany.

Schools offering the English-German Bilingual Program are:

  • Donwood Elementary School (K–5)
  • Princess Margaret School (K–5)
  • Chief Peguis Junior High (6–8)
  • River East Collegiate (9–12)

Japanese & Spanish

Students in Grades 10–12 can also study Spanish at Miles Macdonell, Kildonan-East, or River East collegiates and at Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau. Japanese is offered at Miles Macdonell Collegiate.

Both of these courses provide students with an introduction to the language, and include oral and written components, as well as an exploration of Japan's culture and the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries.
