River East Transcona School Division
creating student success

River East Transcona School Division is introducing full-day every-other-day kindergarten at all 27 early year schools for the 2018–19 school year.

Full-day every-other-day kindergarten is in response to feedback from our school community, as well as positive experiences from our two pilot program schools, Bird's Hill School and Sherwood School. These two schools have offered full-day every-other-day kindergarten for the last 8 years.

Kindergarten registration in RETSD begins on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 8:00 a.m., at the child's designated school. Please bring proof of age (such as: birth certificate, baptismal certificate, passport, INAC status card) and two pieces of ID showing proof of residency (such as: driver's license, Manitoba Health Card, utility bill).

If you have questions, please direct them to RETSD through our Contact Us page.

 FAQ

  • What will my child do at lunchtime?
Students are welcome to go home for lunch or stay and eat their lunch at school. All of our early years schools offer fee-based lunch supervision provided by parent groups to give students a safe environment during the midday break. Please check with your local school for more details about their lunch program.
  • How will this impact busing?

Generally, all K–Grade 6 students who reside more than 1.6 kilometres from their designated school are eligible for transportation. With the move to full-day every-other-day kindergarten, RETSD will no longer offer midday pick-ups or drop-offs as part of our regular bus routes. Please note: busing registration for the 2018–19 school year starts in April 2018 and after you’ve registered your child for kindergarten.

  • What days of the week will my child go to kindergarten?
Kindergarten scheduling will follow the 1,3,5 or 2,4,6 school day cycle. Registration for kindergarten begins Monday, March 5, 2018. Once the schools know approximately how many students to expect for next school year, they will contact the parents/guardians directly to distribute scheduling information. Please watch for registration information on our website. For more information on kindergarten, please click here.
  • Why not offer full-day every-day kindergarten?
The province of Manitoba provides funding for half-time kindergarten.
  • What about child care for the days my child is not at school?

Some of our schools house independently-operated, licensed nursery schools, daycare centres and before and after school programs. Here is a list of the programs in RETSD schools.

You can also contact Manitoba Early Learning and Child Care for more information or ask for contact information at your neighbourhood school.
