El Día de los Muertos

Kildonan-East Collegiate
November 18, 2021

ofrendas.jpgAt Kildonan-East Collegiate, teacher Ebony Hunter’s Grade 10/11 class got to make ofrendas—altars for loved ones who have passed—to celebrate El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Students lucky enough to not have a loved one who has passed chose a famous person to honour instead.

They also decorated skull sugar cookies supplied by KEC’s Pastry Arts program and tried a soda drink called Jarritos and a small spicy candy from Mexico.

The students enjoyed learning about this interesting aspect of Mexican culture and were surprised it wasn't a sad holiday. Some students even thanked Ms. Hunter for the opportunity to honour their loved ones and think about the great memories they shared.
