In September 2021, Grade 9 students across RETSD will receive yellow carabiners that will serve as physical links to mental health resources that can be found in their schools. These links can be found at the yellow friendship benches.
If you've visited any of our high schools (pre-pandemic) you may have noticed they all have matching bright yellow benches in them. These were obtained from The Friendship Bench, a not-for-profit organization that is also behind the #YellowIsForHello hashtag.
RETSD was the first school division in Winnipeg to support The Friendship Bench and "Yellow is for Hello" initiative by getting yellow benches for all our high schools. The initiative is to help reduce stigma and encourage peer-to-peer conversations about mental health. The benches link students to local mental health resources.
Because the Grade 9 students might not yet understand the significance of the yellow friendship benches, we wanted them to have something concrete to orient them to student well-being and well-becoming.
