For Black History Month, École Munroe Middle School has been focusing on Black history in Canada, but spending time learning about Black history in America, too, because the two are connected.
They kicked off the month with some leadership students reading the Maya Angelou poem "A Pledge to Our Youth" over Microsoft Teams to the entire school.
Each day for the first week there was a 20-minute lesson all teachers did with their home rooms on Black history in Canada. On announcements each day of the month, important Black people in Canadian and American history will be highlighted.
Also, every day as students enter the building, the school is playing music over the PA system of influential black artists. The library has also put a display out of books written by Black authors and that tell stories of Black heritage.
Even phys-ed is getting involved, having the students listen to Black artists as they exercise and discuss some of the great Black athletes.
