Kindergarten to Grade 3 students from École Margaret-Underhill spent some time outside during the great weather in January observing changes and animals in the community. They noticed there was a lot of white and a lot of birds.
Kindergarten students collected nature items and made colourful ice decorations. They learnt more about "l'hiver" and "les couleurs." They added treats to their decorations for the "oiseaux." While studying "les arbres," the kindergartners completed a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) challenge to create a pine tree using only popsicle sticks and clay. They created a beautiful forest display.
Grade 1s helped birds by planning and designing bird feeders using only four items! C'était un vrai défi! Grade 2s added some colourful helping hands to the school gardens by exploring "les liquides et les solides." They added bright colours inspired by Juana Martinez-Neal, the author and illustrator they studied for the Global Read Aloud this year. Grade 3s took notes on their walks and will be creating treasure hunts for their cohorts from all their observations.
They were so glad they could take the learning outside and the weather co-operated!
