Congratulations to Jessica Kakeeway-Catcheway, recipient of a Youth Humanitarian Award from the Manitoba Teachers' Society. Jessica is a Grade 4 student at John Pritchard and her teacher Katie Goossen nominated her for organizing a bake sale to support the school's breakfast program.
Jessica's class was learning about the UN's Sustainable Development Goal #2… zero hunger. Jessica, who visits the breakfast program each morning, made the connection that there are people in her school and community who are supported by this program, and she wanted to raise money for it. She organized, baked, scheduled her classmates to assist, and was able to raise $300 to support the program.
Compared to last year, in which she faced some challenges, this has been a marvellous school year for Jessica, thanks largely to her connection to her teacher, Ms. Goossen.
"I made it my mission to connect with her on a personal level this year," says Ms. Goossen, "and she has done so fantastic."
Ms. Goossen shows the difference that caring teachers can make. Jessica will receive a cheque for $1,000 from MTS for winning this award. Way to go, Jessica!
