Recently, Kildonan-East Collegiate students took part in the GameOn 2020 Game Jam. A game jam is a gathering of people for the purpose of planning, designing, and creating one or more games within a short span of time. The challenge was to take an incomplete space game and finish a prototype in 3.5 hours.
The invitation-only event was sponsored by New Media Manitoba, Ubisoft Winnipeg, and BitSpace Development. Matt Woelk, Ubisoft Winnipeg senior programmer, advised students to keep it simple and not create a game with AI (artificial intelligence)—naturally, one of the Kildonan-East teams took that as a challenge and completed a game prototype with enemies that search out the player.
A second team completed a playable demo with laser-firing turret enemies targeting the player. Other teams came from Winnipeg and Pembina Trails school divisions.
