River East Transcona School Division
creating student success

The Manitoba Indigenous Youth Achievement Awards (MIYAA) is an annual tribute that recognizes the outstanding achievement of Manitoba’s Indigenous youth who exhibit high standards of excellence, dedication, leadership, and accomplishments in the following areas: Academic, Athletic, Artistic, Cultural, Community/Volunteer, Business/Entrepreneurial, Health, Personal Achievement, and Employment in a Traditional Field. The MIYAA selection process is unique in that recipients are chosen by committees consisting of Indigenous youth from the community.

This year RETSD is the host of both the virtual awards events and the selection committee. Our team, led by Leanne Smith (the RETSD division inclusion specialist for Indigenous education initiatives) and our IT department, have been planning to move this prestigious provincial event into an RETSD hosted virtual event. Additionally, RETSD students were instrumental in selecting this year’s recipients. The RETSD selection committee was made up of Indigenous youth from across the division who were supported by their teachers. MIYAA is supported by a working committee compromised of members from around the province who are all dedicated to promoting a positive image of Indigenous youth. The committee knew of youth in the community who excelled in their activities, and who they felt should be recognized for their achievements. Several members of that original group are still on today’s committee and their leadership and vision continues to guide this important work.

RETSD is proud to have led the student award selection process and we are equally proud of our ability to host this event on our virtual platform. Please feel free to join us for the TEAMS Live Event or watch a recoding of it after the fact. The links can be found below.
