creating student success

The RETSD board of trustees has completed a review of middle years French immersion enrolment and related catchment areas west of Lagimodiere. The review was identified as a priority in the 2017–18 school year due to increasing demand for French immersion programming in RETSD and the impact it is having at John Henderson Junior High School—which is at capacity. Adjustments to the boundaries were necessary for John Henderson Junior High School and Munroe Junior High School—which will impact students coming from Neil Campbell School and Salisbury Morse Place School.

Effective September 2019, Munroe will introduce an early French immersion track, and French immersion students from Salisbury Morse Place and Neil Campbell (who live in the new catchment area) will now go to Munroe for their middle years French immersion starting in Grade 6.

  • Will this affect busing?
The busing policy will not change as a result of this plan. Students in kindergarten to Grade 6 who live over 1.6km away from their designated school qualify for busing. To learn more, please see: Policy EEA – Student Transportation.
  • Why are you doing this?
Demand for French immersion programming in our division, and across the province, is growing. Our review showed that John Henderson Junior High School is at capacity and by adding early French immersion to Munroe Junior High School, we can accommodate this growth which is expected to continue for some time.
  • When will this happen?
We will be implementing a staggered rollout of early French immersion programming at Munroe Junior High School starting with Grade 6 students in September 2019, Grade 6 and 7 students in September 2020, and Grade 6, 7, and 8 students in September 2021.
  • What if i have questions?
You can speak to your school principal or email us at communications@retsd.mb.ca.
  • How will we know if we're affected?
Parents and guardians of students affected by this have received personal notification. This change does not affect any current John Henderson Junior High School or Munroe Junior High School students.
