SAFELY BUSING YOUR CHILDREN
TRANSPORTATION AND INCLEMENT WINTER WEATHER
This note is to assist all concerned to know what the procedures
are and where to access information surrounding the cancellation
of school bus transportation.
GENERAL RULE
All metro Winnipeg school divisions follow one system. At about
6:10 a.m. we consult Environment Canada weather information – either
on television or via its website.
If the wind chill is –45 or colder at the Winnipeg airport,
we cancel buses, but schools usually remain open.
WHERE TO GO FOR INFORMATION AFTER ABOUT 6:30 a.m.
Please listen to the major radio stations. Generally they broadcast
cancellations about every 15 minutes. Additionally, turn on Citytv
or CKY TV. Also, please access the homepage of this website where
we will post a message if buses are cancelled.
IF BY 6:45 A.M. WE HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED OR POSTED A CANCELLATION MESSAGE,
BUSES ARE RUNNING.
Please do not call our transportation office, or our board office,
or the media outlets. Doing so ties up all these phone lines. Instead,
please access information as outlined above.
TRANSPORTATION CANCELLATION PROCEDURES
In the event that it is necessary to close schools and/or cancel
transportation because of severe weather conditions, the following
procedure will be followed:
a) The decision to close schools and/or cancel transportation will
be made by the superintendent in consultation with the director of
transportation
b) The decision to close, if it is made, will be conveyed to the transportation
supervisor in Sunrise School Division for its students transported to River
East Transcona schools.
c) The decision will be communicated to the media:

d) Everyone is asked to listen to the media for announcements regarding
school closing and/or cancellation of transportation.
e) If it is necessary to close schools, or bus students home early during the
school day because of severe weather conditions, schools will be contacted
by phone by the Superintendent’s Department.
f) In the event that transportation is cancelled in the morning, this cancellation
will apply for the whole day.
