ELA 20F

ELA 20F is the entry-level course for High School English.  In this course, learners begin to develop an awareness of the different forms of language and the ability to apply their language skills to a variety of forms.  Due to the learning gaps that adult learners can experience, this course may include a number of different elements designed to best meet the needs of the particular class and to prepare individual students for success as they move through our English courses.  To this end, students will engage within the English Language Arts - reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing - in a variety of ways and for a variety of purposes.  Prerequisite for English 30S.

ELA: Transactional Focus 30S

This course helps students to develop an awareness of the different forms of language and the ability to apply their language skills to a variety of forms. Students produce and engage within oral, written and visual contexts that inform, direct, persuade, plan, analyze, argue and explain. While the texts students read, view and write have a practical purpose, they often use literary devices and expressive language to convey meaning. Due to the learning gaps that adult learners can experience, this course may include additional elements to best meet the needs of the particular class.  Prerequisite:  English 20F or demonstration of knowledge of English 20F.

ELA:  Transactional Focus 40S

In this course, students build on the skills and knowledge already gained in previous English Language Arts courses and through real-world experiences and prior learning.  Students continue to develop their knowledge and skills to listen, speak, read, write and represent using a wide variety of texts that inform, direct, persuade, plan, analyze, argue and explain.  Due to the learning gaps that adult learners can experience, this course may include additional elements to best meet the needs of the particular class.  Upon completing this course, it is our goal that students are prepared to effectively read, write and view the texts that they encounter as they move forward in their personal, professional and academic lives.  Prerequisite:  English 30S or demonstration of knowledge of English 30S.

ELA:  Language & Technical Communication 40S

This course gives students the opportunity to explore the technical materials that have become an integral part of everyday and professional life.  Learners explore a wide range of technical documents, such as formal email, letters, memos, instructions, surveys, graphs, charts and formal reports.  Students learn to consider the variables of purpose and audience when creating technical documents, as well as strategies for reading technical materials.  Students develop the ability to create well-organized, clear and concise documents that pertain to consumer, business and community issues.  Upon completing this course, it is our goal that students are prepared to effectively read, write and view the technical texts that they encounter as they move forward in their personal, professional and academic lives.  Prerequisite:  English 30S or demonstration of knowledge of English 30S.
